This month’s prompt, serendipity, is an interesting one. I have a strange relationship with serendipity and luck. Throughout my life, I have attributed much of my success to serendipity and luck, but a recent conversation with a colleague of mine highlighted the fact that I might be giving them both a bit too much credit!
A library land update: Creative Commons Certificate
I have really hit the ground running this year!
In mid-January I started work on The Creative Commons Certificate. The Creative Commons Certificate is suitable for everyone and introduces learners to key concepts around Creative Commons licences, open practices, copyright and the ethos of the Commons.

#GLAMBlogClub September 2018 – Strange
September marks my triumphant return to GLAM Blog Club! This month’s theme – ‘strange’ – is particularly interesting for me. As I’ve settled into full-time, on-going work I’ve had a bit of time to reflect on both my strange journey into librarianship and also the strange turns my career path has taken in the short couple of years I’ve been in the GLAMR industry.
Since last we left our intrepid librarian …
It’s been almost a year since I last blogged! It’s safe to say the time since my last post has been a total whirlwind – a lot has happened, but here are the highlights:

My favourite library podcasts: Redux
Well, it’s been a while between blogs.
A lot has happened in the last few months – I’ve begun wrapping up my studies ahead of my graduation in December and I’ve found full time work in an academic library!
While I may have fallen off the blogging horse, I have continued to indulge in (mostly during transit from work to university or work and back again) my love of podcasts. Since my last blog on the subject, I’ve found a few new library podcasts, so I thought I’d share them with you all.
Adulting 101: A library program for emerging adults
Recently, North Bend Public Library in Oregon announced that they would be running a program called ‘Adulting 101‘.
‘Adulting 101’ covers a number of useful skills including basic cooking (and how cook in college dorms without a dedicated kitchen), how to create a budget, how to do taxes, how to search and apply for jobs and how to identify fake news.

Creating your digital toolbox
One thing I’ve quickly discovered is that GLAMR folk benefit from building a robust digital toolbox.
Why?
Well, during the course of my studies, I’ve run up against several assignments and tasks that have required a creative solution within a short time frame. From putting together a digital content curation to creating a persona poster or making an appealing banner for your webpage – having a bunch of easy to use, (preferably!) free and polished digital tools to call on is a must for many a GLAMR student and professional.
My favourite library podcasts
I don’t know about you, but I love podcasts.
Other than reading, listening to podcasts is my favourite way to pass time while commuting to work or university. Most days, I am able to finish one or two podcasts during my travels, so I listen to my fair share! Lately, I’ve been moving away from my usual true crime fare and toward library related podcasts.
There are many entertaining library podcasts out there and I’ve found that several do double duty. In addition to being a great way to pass some time, many library focused podcasts are a great way to learn a bit about what’s going on in libraries around the world, making them a useful professional development tool.
To that end, I thought I’d share a few of my favourites here. Most of them are library focused, hence the title of the blog. My apologies to the ‘GAMRers’ in GLAMR!
